Sure. The way this site works is:

If you use ANY HTML in your post, you must use HTML to make the link. If there is NO HTML in your post, the link will enable automatically (look at your preview to see).

In your case, there is a paragraph break (<P>) just before the link. That disabled the autolink, so it's just a string of text.

If you want to post a link with other HTML in the post, use this formula:

<a href="http://www.freerepublic.com">Freerepublic</a>

That will show up as

Freerepublic.

If you want the link to open in a new window instead of this same one, the formula is as follows:

<a href="http://www.freerepublic.com" target=_blank>Freerepublic</a>

Thus when you click on it, another window opens up:

Freerepublic
