I think you're quoting Luke 19:10.

But there is a radical difference in the KJV and NIV versions of Luke 9:56. That's for sure.

Anyway, I think that most of the time the problem can be broken down into two main issues.
1) The Bible is literal. If it is then NIV and others can’t possibly be correct since it’s not all there. If it is not literal, then it doesn’t really matter.
2) People just don’t take the time to compare the scriptures. (I didn’t for a long time)
