Anti-redistricting rally planned
BY TRICIA CORTEZ Times staff writer
State Rep. Richard Raymond (D-Laredo) and local Democratic supporters and activists urged Laredoans to board two buses Saturday morning for an Austin rally to oppose congressional redistricting.
Nearly 50 buses from around the state are expected to converge on the south steps of the Capitol in Austin for the 11:30 a.m. rally.
The two Laredo buses will depart from Taco Palenque, 4515 San Bernardo Ave., at 6 a.m. The buses will return the same day.
The rally is being organized by the Texas Democratic Party, American GI Forum and LULAC, "to send a message to Gov. Rick Perry to stop redistricting," said Sylvia Palumbo of the Webb County Democratic Party.
Palumbo will spearhead local organizing efforts since Webb County Democratic Chairman Roberto Balli is on vacation this week.
Raymond said the Saturday rally will also be a forum to express support for the Texas 11 in Albuquerque, N.M.
Last Monday, 11 Texas Democratic Senators left Austin for New Mexico to break quorum and block passage of the Republican-led congressional redistricting bill on the Senate Floor.
"The people need to realize that what's happening will affect minorities for many years, and we're not going to have a voice if this happens," Pete Lizcano of Laredo's LULAC #12 said. "Everybody needs to go and show that they're against it."
