Other respondents hailed from Spain (4%) Spain is in South America? I wonder why South Americans are called "Hispanic" or "Latin". They are mostly Native American with some Spanish. Now that they've lived in North America "Hispanic" includes mixtures of white, asian, black. They are melting agents in America's melting pot. In a few generations we will all have to be called Americans.

It's a language based grouping... hispanics are those that speak spanish. In as much as Spaniards hate to be in that group, technically they are hispanic too, or Latin. Italians, Spanish, etc. they're in the Latin grouping... this is based on language of course. Some people may get insulted at being called hispanic to them that means being associated with black people (as if that's bad). In the Caribbean and South America it's mostly class driven, than race, since interracial marriage was never illegal and you can't tell one from another in many countries.
Sometimes Spaniards can be very prejudiced. I remember being on a train in Europe and these young Spanish girls were talking about my mother and her friends, calling them niggers but oh well... such is life. The whole category of hispanic as a race is ridiculous. What's wrong with AMERICAN?
