Boise Police Union Wants to Get Rid of Polygraphs
By Starlyn Klein
BOISE - Before the Boise police officers voted no-confidence in their chief, Don Pierce refused to take a polygraph test requested by the police union.
They wanted to ask him questions about the shake-up at City Hall. Pierce also refused to meet with the entire union body. "All we're saying is why not and we're assuming that his reason is that he doesn't trust the polygraph if that's the case let's be fair and not apply it to anyone," said Boise Police Union Attorney, Brian Donesley.
Although policies are different for the chief than his rank and file, his officers think it's time to stop requiring them to take one or face termination in personnel related matters. "The higher up the ladder in a regime like this, the more accountable should be our managers. It doesn't work the other way around," said Donesley.
Boise's mayor says she'll bring the matter before the council, but she doesn't think it's really an issue. "If a charge had been filed and if those things reared up and became that prevalent of course then a polygraph but in this case there were no charges no findings that such a step would be necessary, so I think these are two different scenarios," said Boise Mayor, Carolyn Terteling-Payne.
