I can't believe that the State's attorney could not provide evidence that Pap smears, family planning services, breast and cancer screenings, and other health care to women would be provided by services other than Planned Parenthood. Why do they have a monopoly on women's health care?

Planned Parenthood Has No Right To Taxpayer Money

Austin - Late Monday, a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction in Planned Parenthood vs. Eduardo J. Sanchez, Texas Commissioner of Health. The injunction allows Planned Parenthood to receive more public funds despite the Texas Legislature cutting those funds for abortion providers.

"We strongly disagree with this decision. Planned Parenthood has no right to force Texas taxpayers to support efforts to kill the unborn," said Kelly Shackelford, Chief Counsel with Liberty Legal Institute.

Planned Parenthood organizations in Central Texas, Houston, North Texas, San Antonio, South Central Texas, and the Texas Capitol Region are suing the state demanding $13 million or else they will have to stop performing elective abortions. Texas law does not allow for federal and state funds to be used for abortion services. Therefore, as the law currently stands, Planned Parenthood would need to either cease providing abortion services or establish a separate legal entity to carry out abortions in order to receive public funding.

"The elected representatives of the people of Texas should decide how taxpayer money is spent, not the court system," said Hiram Sasser, staff attorney assigned to the case.

In July, Liberty Legal made the decision to take action and defend Sanchez in the case against Planned Parenthood. Liberty Legal Institute also filed a brief in support of the Texas law to prohibit federal and state funds to be used for abortion services.

The Liberty Legal Institute (LLI) is a legal organization committed to the defense of religious freedoms and First Amendment rights.
