[history]
One of the most powerful campaign mailings against Gov. Gray Davis is now being sent out by the state Department of Motor Vehicles.
About 600,000 license renewal notices a week are arriving in homes with fees nearly triple last year's - and many recipients are blaming Davis.

fees nearly triple last year's Davis supporters say the money goes mostly to local services like police protection.
At least California will get "nearly triple last year's" level of police protection. Crime this year should be nearly non-existent!!!
LOL!
Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to just pass another law and make it illegal to commit crimes? I think we need a government study on this... </sarcasm>

Have the police and city legal system stop ALL prosecution for crimes that don't pass the Constitutional smell test.
Now you've cut your city payroll in half-
problem solved! :)

If you own two late model SUV's you're going to pay close to $2000 in registration fees. For my 2000 Maxima and 1999 Ford Ranger, we will be paying about $900. He's toast. People were calling local radio stations. People on fixed budgets. Here's the rub, people went out and bought new cars because of all the dealer incentives 0% financing, etc. Now, you have to pay new car registration fees which could be over $1,000. It just out and out sucks.

I would be ecstatic to only pay $308. My tripled amount next year will be $561 for a 1999 Expedition. Anyone that just bought a new car of medium value is going to be paying around $800 a year. When insurance is almost less than the registration, there is a problem.
To: ScottinSacto
A 2004 Nissan Sentra, a low-priced compact car, will have a registration fee of approximately $540.

Actually it's worse than that. A NEW Toyota Avalon or Ford Expedition will start around $550 - $650 and drop around $100 per year if the new car tax regime is like the old one that was dropped 3-4 years ago. A Honda Accord or Toyota Camry at $20,000 - $25,000 new will generate an initial tax of $400 - $500. It's outrageous. Basically, the California vehicle registration fee is primarily a state property tax. There are at least 3 separate line items on the bill (a Registration fee, a Vehicle License Fee, and anywhere from 1 - 4 others). Two of them amount to about $38, but the Vehicle License Fee is loosely based on the value of the car. Technically it is a property tax and can be deducted on your income tax filing. Because it is a property tax, it starts out very high for a new car and gradually declines. I have a 2000 Expedition that renews in December, and it'll probably jump to $300-$400.
Oh, BTW, every two years you must have a smog check in California and that runs $50-70 depending on the station you go to.

I guess I lowballed it. I haven't bought a car since December 1999 and while it was initially about $650, sounds like the same care at a similar price would be closer to $1000 now. OUUUUCHHH!!!
To: Cousin Eddie
Thanks to Tim Eyman, my license tabs are $30 on a brand new Honda.

"...many recipients are blaming Davis."
It's easy to complain & blame someone for a tax increase you don't like. But, what solutions do the complainers have for fixing the $38billion deficit? Strange how the media never tells the whole story.
To: familyofman
Solution: cut spending, cut spending, and cut spending.
Since Davis took office, population growth and inflation COMBINED have grown 21%. State revenues have grown 26%. If Davis was competent, the state would have a higher surplus than when he took office. But Davis and the legislature, in their infinite wisdom, have grown spending by 40%!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To: NormsRevenge
Davis supporters say the money goes mostly to local services like police protection The famous Washington Monument argument.
When cuts are needed in government or out-of-control spending is justified, liberals always say that police or fire protection will be the first to go if they don't get their way.
