So that's what that logo is! I saw it driving home the other night and I couldn't figure out what it represented.

That would be unfair to the athletes for whom the Olympics is usually a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I'd rather we show up and win event after event after event.

That carries more weight than a boycott (IMHO). Look at the Tour de France - you had the French and many other Europeans who were against the war in Iraq, against the US, etc. and because of Lance Armstrong and company, they had to silently suffer as they watched an American beating their best, as well as the numerous American flags all along the roads in France. Still brings a smile to my face.

Sign reads: "Better dead than red."

Or it reads: Frank Burns Eats Worms

Or: Get us out of the U.N.

Does it though? What would the olympics do without the US television contracts? How much will be spent in Bejing if we don't show?

It's a drop in the bucket compared to what this country spends on goods from China every day, and if US television companies want to spend their money on it and think they can make it back, that's their thing.

If you want to rail against the communists and our money going over there (and I'd join you in a heartbeat), you would have to get this country to actually do something about the trade imbalance - that is where we are being affected the most. Nobody in the administration or congress really cares about the trade imbalance or about goods made in China (with or without slave labor).

Some in the DoD are concerned about our reliance upon foreign countries as far as the tools and weapons of war, but they seem to be ignored.

If they did something about China and the trade imbalance, and prices of imported goods rose to the point where it was financianlly advantageous to make more goods in this country, people would begin complaining about the rising cost of said goods, and no politician wants that on their hands.

Sorry for the derail.

All I can imagine from that evil symbol is it is dripping peoples' blood. Well, it sure fits the Peoples-Killing-Republic-of-China.

LOL, LOL ! Point well taken. I am just a dufus when it comes to Chinese culture. Strange, because I studied Chinese art, history and philosophy many, many years ago.
Seems like I forgot most of what I learned.

it is a chance for china to look good with the world watching, and for those wimps in the UN to look the other way.

Not if we make a big spectacle about the dissidents, ahh who am I kidding, anybody that speaks against the Chinese government will find themselves and their families dead.

It's just enough is enough. What if they decided Saudi Arabia, Jordan or Syria were hosting the olympics? More money for the PA to give to the families of homicide bombers.

Saudi Arabia and Jordan are good allies and friends of the US, at least that is what the government tells us, and so we would be there waving the flag and pretending that they were our friends (I doubt most on FR consider the Saudis to be our friends/allies, but some try to go along with what the administration tells us).

I say we goto the Olympics - our athletes deserve to beat the other countries, and our government isn't going to do anything about trade imbalances in our lifetime, so not much else one can do.

I guess that pretty much puts the clamper on the "Free Tibet" enthusiasm from the Hollywood bunch, hmm?

I doubt it. I don't think they are capable of experiencing cognitive dissonance.
