It means jing as in Beijing. It's old old style calligraphy -- jing means capitol. Beijing means north capitol, like nanjing means south capitol.

According to the news last night it is supposed to be a runner running in victory.
It does look like a calligraphy character though.

Thanks very much for that information. It's always good to know the _real_ story, instead of speculating.

Maybe the 'Hitlery For President' campaign can borrow the same logo...

Orcs?
From the mines of Moria?
Didn't know that was in China.

Interesting. That symbol appears to approximate a traditional script character - it probably evokes an oracle bone inscription. I wonder what it means in Chinese. The symbol looks a bit like a cross between the two characters "bei" (north) and "jing" (district) -- 2nd and 3rd characters in the image below. But it's odd; I thought this was the symbol:

"capitol" -- interesting. I'd seen it rendered as "district," but I don't know Mandarin...

I still think we should boycott the Olympics in Red China! That would be unfair to the athletes for whom the Olympics is usually a once in a lifetime opportunity.
I'd rather we show up and win event after event after event.

What's interesting about the logo and the caption is that it is translated "New Beijing, Great Olympics" when in Chinese it actually says, "New Beijing, New Olympics".

"I don't think Hell has matching red outfits for everyone" No, they're black pantsuits to match Hillary!
To: tallhappy
This is taking red a little far, isn't it?
To: tallhappy
Nothing new here. In Amerika we celebrate Commie China red as well! New Rockets logo designed presumable to sell in China - Yeoh! Ming (cuz the Houston people hate it).
To: Eala
But it's odd; I thought this was the symbol:Nope. The actual Olympic symbol for each games is different from the bid logo. Why? I dunno. The original Atlanta bid logo was a ring of stylized letter "A"s in the five Olympic colors. The final logo was the torch and flame motif that most are familiar with.

Words escape me right now. I am utterly shocked. Doesn't Beijing vet their symbolism with people who are aware of other cultures? DUH ! DOH !

Red is considered a lucky color in Chinese. I'd comment, but it probably would be the straw that attracts the ZOT.
