THE Australian Defence Force is assessing the use of performance-enhancing chemical compounds to produce fitter fighting men and women.
The ADF revealed that some aircrews have been using hypnotic drugs during extended flight operations to control sleep and alertness.
"The use of substances such as EAs (ergogenic aids) has been in response to specific requirements," the ADF said in documents released to the Herald Sun under Freedom of Information laws.
"The prime example has been policy on the use of hypnotics to manage aircrew rest during sustained operations (HD 306 use of sleep-inducing drugs by ADF aircrew)."
It is believed hypnotics would have been used during the Iraqi conflict.
