No Basis for Washington Post Story
PRESS RELEASE FROM STATE: Regarding the story in today's Washington Post about Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and Deputy Secretary Richard L. Armitage, there was no conversation between the Deputy Secretary and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice concerning any plans for "stepping down." There is no basis for the story. As Secretary Powell has always said, he and Deputy Secretary Armitage serve at the pleasure of the President, and will continue to do so.
###
"This is gossip and rumor," said State Department spokesman Philip Reeker when asked about The Washington Post story. "The story purports to describe a conversation that took place. That conversation never took place."
###
WHITE HOUSE: Scott McClellan just announced that Secy Powell and Deputy Secy Armitage will be arriving at the Crawford Ranch tomorrow evening for dinner with the President. The two will overnight in Crawford and then will meet again with the President on Wednesday and have lunch before heading back to DC...

Actually, it sounds like conservative wishful thinking.

I say the same thing about Worldnet Daily and enjoy watching the accompanying hysterical reactions. :)

No one resigns anymore. Such concepts of honor have long been dead in this country. No even one resignation over 9/11! A resignation is seen as a sign of weakness or of a mistake and we can't admit to mistakes now can we? What happens now is called Bureaucratic Marginalization. An offical who either "messed up", was obviously wrong, or is simply incompetent isn't removed or asked to resign- they are simply left in place but without power and denied access to the POTUS or other power centers. They are denied any input into policy making or decisions. They simply become automatic signature machines for the policies of others.

Absolutely. This is sooooooooo predictable of the liberal press. They've been tossing stuff at the wall since President Bush got elected. They latch on and expand anything that may stick.

What is breaking news, is that earlier breaking news story is TOTAL FABRICATION.

Almost as honest as the dis-info that is spewed from our government.

It doesn't matter. If he leaves today or in two years, he will be replaced. Same for all other positions.

I listened to the last half of Drudge Radio last night and he seemed to be pushing this rumor--then before his radio show was over, he said "Well, FOX is FINALLY on the story"....

That there was a conversation with Condie Rice was denied, NOT that Powell and his sidekick would be leaving.

Which part of "There is no basis for the story" are you having trouble with?
That statement says the entire thing is FABRICATION.
To: Miss Marple
Even if Powell were considering leaving, he would NEVER announce it this early, not only to avoid harming the President but more importantly, it would undercut his position as Secretary of State. Exactly and I do wonder about your comment about the trap to out the leaker .. I hope so

Well, those who believe everything the WP & NYT prints, but don't believe Debka, take noteI agree.
The former "paper of record", the New York Times, is a known hotbed of fabricated stories and sloppy reporting, and the Washington Post is a shameless DNC organ so therefore a nest of liars and scumbags as well.
