Thank you all for reminding me why I'm glad I don't live in Illinois any more. About once every five years or so I forget and go visit there. Then I remember. This time you saved me the expense and aggravation of a trip.

Enjoy the staggering heat, the bugs, the flat featureless countryside, the incredibly ugly architecture, the vast piles of snow, the gray skies, the...The only thing I really like about Chicago is how much fun political life is there. They make these sharks in Washington look like a bunch of wusses. In DC, if there is a serious disagreement you may find your funding gets reduced. In Chicago if there is a serious disagreement you may find yourself with a couple of hollowpoints in your head, locked in the trunk of a car parked at O'Hare for two weeks.

Now, see? We hardly ever have fun stuff like that happen in DC.

Years ago I went to grad school near Little Italy. My gentleman friends and I would have dinner in the charming mom-and-pop restaurants that served the local community. And so often we would see the Chicago Police Commissioner dining with the city's mobsters. Made you feel confident about law enforcement in the city.

At least in Chicago you always knew who to pay off to get something done. It was a shock when we moved to Maryland and found that they actually had a system of jurisprudence here and no defined scheme of appropriate payoffs. Very confusing.
