I think that's just an old time saying - in this case a euphemism for someone who is stoic and unperturbable. The idea being that Indians had a reputation for being unemotional, and Bryce lost no sleep over the shooting. Fascinating read, it reminded me of hard-boiled detective fiction (e.g. Chandler, Hammett), with the advantage of being true...
