Checkers pay no taxes and probably only have a high school education (or are retirees). They also have little to zero disposable income and invest hardly anything. I would not compare the net loss to an engineer that probably pays more in taxes than they make all year and puts money into a 401k account.

They actually do pay payroll taxes, but I get your gist, there should only protection for the guilded IT worker, even though technology and globalization is effecting everybody for good(savings for the companies) and bad(some IT workers losing there jobs).

BTW, if you were the owner of the company, wouldn't you try to cut the costs of your company, such as many people try to get the most bang out there buck, when they comparison shop.

Another question: Do you have the mistaken impression that outsourcing only effects IT workers?

I'm just pointing out the economic difference between the two scenerios. The checker has the opportunity to go to college and develop more significant skills. Although with the offshoring trend I'm not sure what I would tell the checker to major in.

I don't think that business owner would have any other choice as they would need to remain competitive with companies who are outsourcing. That is why government involvement is necessary (I know that sounds wrong coming from a conservative). I firmly believe that the fed has been overregulating us here but not giving 2 bits about what happens under the guise of "free market global trade."

If you owned a business and were able to cut your labor costs by a factor of ten, would you pass the savings on to your customer?

Let's compare it more to a small business where you've hired your friends to work for you. Now are you going to fire them to hire some cheap 3rd world nimrod just to make a little more money per year?? I don't think so.

Now let's scale it up. Are you going to fire fellow American's just to hire some cheap 3rd world nimrod. The answer should be no. But somehow alot of MBAs without a creative bone in their body think it's just fine.

Something is certainly broken. I don't like the idea of a database with my financial information on it, is now under the control of a bunch of third world yahoos. I don't like the idea that when I call up an airline to make reservations I'm talking to someone in India. Now I do my best to buy American but some of this stuff is out of my control as a consumer. There isn't a company profile when I buy insurance for my car that indicates how much of the compant's work is done at overseas offices.

One more thing is that the Federal government IS supposed to regulate trade with foreign countries. So this is certainly something the Feds should be involved with. But controlling our borders is too and they do a sh*t job on that.
