The AP story was updated at 9:55 to tell us:

"The deputy had been shot in the upper torso and was pronounced dead at the scene."

It's not clear whether there was a gunfight. The news accounts are not saying it, but the scanner has been saying from the very beginning that the perp has the deputy's gun.
