I just finished it and I have to say I'm disturbed at how easily these folks are lying down and accepting things as they are.

I have faith that the human spirit won't just lay down and die as they do in this even with present trends being what they are. I think people will fight this. Its been my experience that dying out of sheer apathy and killing in the name of stopping something wicked are two totally different things.
