The Viking was created to do carrier-based ASW, replacing the S-2F. However, the US Navy is quietly eliminating all of its fixed-wing ASW aircraft. The S-3s will be gone in a few years; the P-3s will be gone by 2012; the replacement Multilission Maritime Aircraft is no in serious doubt. I don't understand their reasoning. Budget, perhaps?
