Second Thoughts

Media Mayor Robert A. McMahon read last week's column -- he says he reads it every week -- and called to say that I was a bit hard on Congressman Curt Weldon. I asked him to write a couple of paragraphs summing up his feelings and the following is what he wrote:
"I was surprised last week when you mentioned Curt Weldon's involvement with Dick Winters and followed it with Congress' lack of action on Veterans' Benefits. There is no congressman who is more involved with Veterans' issues than Curt. His fellow congressmen refer to him as a bulldog on these issues. "As you know, I am a Democrat and probably could find fault on some issue, but Veterans and foreign affairs would not be one of them.
"Curt is actively working to upgrade Dick Winters DSC to the Medal of Honor. Dick was recommended for the MOH for his actions on D-Day but General Maxwell Taylor decided only one would be rewarded for D-Day for the 101st Airborne. Dick and a small squad took out the 4 big guns on Utah Beach and Dick captured the maps showing the German positions in and around the area. On Omaha Beach where the guns were in place more than 2,000 American lost their lives. On Utah Beach 114 men died. This injustice has lasted 59 years."

I told Mayor McMahon, during our pleasant conversation, that I was a fan of his and that I thought he ought to change his registration so we could send him to Washington. Actually, he wouldn't have to change, I would vote for him anyway. But, since Curt is working hard for veterans and we know he works hard for firemen, I will ease up on him. I sincerely thank the mayor for his input.

But don't expect me to ease up on Sen. Arlen (Wishy Washy) Specter. That man is an embarrassment to all Republicans and to Pennsylvania.
Specter just shafted the inner-city kids in Washington by voting against a school choice bill that would allow them an escape from a substandard education.
He just barely brought himself to vote with the rest of the Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee to give a 10-9 preliminary approval to give Alabama Attorney General William Pryor, an outspoken foe of abortion, a seat on the bench of federal appeals court.
He said he would reserve a final decision until the vote on the Senate floor. That's what we call a real profile in courage. If Wishy Washy thinks Pryor unsuitable for the court, he should have voted no.
Specter will face Pat Toomey in the upcoming primary. I will vote for Toomey and I urge you to do so too.

The Inquirer hasn't changed much under the direction of its new editor Amanda Bennett. Led by cartoonist Baghdad Tony Auth, and the editorial staff, we are still treated to our daily dose of Bush bashing, let's lose the war on terrorism and don't cut our taxes.
We cannot blame the demise of the "Inquirer Magazine" on Ms. Bennett, but she will have to take responsibility for its dreadful substitution. That thing they call "Image" is a (expletive deleted) poor excuse for a journalistic endeavor.

I feel the same way. I think Specter might lose this primary.
