Laws vary by jurisdiction. In D.C., wooden sticks are allowed up to three feet long and two inches wide. No metal or sharp stakes allowed. In New York City the only thing allowed to support your sign is cardboard tubing.
We've never had a problem using the wooden sticks allowed under D.C. law and we've never been sued. Use your best judgment in accordance with your local laws.

Well, I've gotten some pretty fierce paper cuts from that danged posterboard. The pain! The suffering! Safety corners and padded edges on posterboard should be a federal law...
Some localities can be pretty crazy with their rules, I'm sure.

I'd suggest the cardboard tubes or fat long balloons.
Avoid giving the enemy a chance to steal a stick and incite something. They are evil enough to do it.
IMHO.
