WASHINGTON, July 29 /U.S. Newswire/ -- "Christ often preached His truth to reprobates, turning some of the worst public sinners into His most devoted disciples," said American Life League president Judie Brown. "Archbishop Sean O'Malley might have such an opportunity this Wednesday at his installation Mass. I pray that with the Holy Spirit's guidance, Boston's new archbishop will use the occasion to instruct errant Catholic political figures such as Ted Kennedy and John Kerry that their promotion of abortion is simply not permitted under the teachings of the Catholic Church."
Kennedy and Kerry, Massachusetts' two U.S. senators, are both on American Life League's list of Deadly Dozen senators who claim the Catholic faith yet consistently champion pro-abortion public policy. Because they hold public office, they have been extended the courtesy of an invitation to Archbishop O'Malley's installation. In a recent magazine article, Kennedy said his personal beliefs were what mattered and dismissed Church leadership, saying, "I know what I believe...it's their problem, (Catholic bishops) not mine." Mrs. Brown said, "It's reasonable to say that these men, who staunchly and relentlessly oppose such a fundamental Church teaching by sanctioning the killing of preborn children, should not even be allowed to set foot in the cathedral. But then again, who more desperately needs to be invited to hear the Word of God than those who refuse to recognize the truth? " Mrs. Brown said there is a second issue that is most critical. "I must ask Archbishop O'Malley to prayerfully consider denying Holy Communion to abortion advocates Kennedy and Kerry. Inviting them to Mass could be considered compassionate; allowing them to receive Our Eucharistic Lord would be a sacrilege. " Canon 915 of the Catholic Church's Code of Canon Law directs that those "who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin, are not to be admitted to Holy Communion." Earlier this year, Bishop William Weigand of Sacramento asked California Gov. Gray Davis - and any Catholic who supports abortion - to "abstain from receiving Holy Communion until he has a change of heart." Bishop Weigand described such a pro-abortion person as "not in good standing with the Church. "
"I would hope that Archbishop O'Malley issues a similar rebuke in Boston, " said Mrs. Brown. "I was heartened by his words when he served as bishop of Palm Beach, Florida. There, he told his people, 'Our quest for respect for life is not a political issue, it is a moral imperative.' This is just what Ted Kennedy and John Kerry need to hear. I implore Archbishop O'Malley to deliver exactly this message to these political leaders in hope that they will reject the pro-abortion agenda and embrace the truth. "
