WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Federal investigators have dug up thousands of pages of classified documents at more than 10 locations in the Washington area buried by convicted spy Brian Regan, the Washington Post reported on Tuesday. "It's pretty explicit information" that could be "very damaging," one source was quoted as saying to the newspaper.
The FBI found the items were buried in parks and other secluded areas throughout Virginia and Maryland just outside the nation's capital. Among the documents are a CD-ROM with a manual on U.S. spy satellites and their orbits, the paper said.
The newspaper said that Regan, currently serving a life sentence, had a series of coded documents in his jail cell that included a map of a park indicating where some of the items were buried.
The former U.S. Air Force intelligence analyst was sentenced in March after being convicted of attempting spying for Iraq and China, and illegally gathering defense information.
Life without parole as a result of a plea bargain with the prosecution.

I think life without parole ought to include a monthly whipping.
In his cell? He was still spying???

In a surprise deal with prosecutors yesterday, convicted spy Brian P. Regan accepted a sentence of life in prison for trying to sell secrets to Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in exchange for an agreement not to prosecute his wife, who authorities say may have obstructed justice to help her husband.
But, of course, there has to be SPIN from Richard Cohen:

As sometimes happens, it did not. This month Regan was convicted on charges of attempted espionage, for which John Ashcroft's Justice Department, properly appalled at such lousy spelling, demanded the death penalty. Unaccountably, the jury balked, sparing Regan's life but ensuring that he will be imprisoned for a long time.
That's just an out and out lie.
