It has long been my contention the GSEs are little more than inflationary money pumps that suck cash from every corner of the earth and stuff it in the American mortgage market. Since Fannie/Freddie retain large quantities of the MBS they issue/reissue they too benefit from housing inflation.

The music stops when the Chinese/Japanese/etc. stop buying our debt.
