"Saddam has always been a family man."
I guess the author isn't aware of the fact that the reason Saddam and Uday were distant was because of Uday's resentment over Saddam's mistresses even though he was married to Uday's mother. One can paint any picture when mundane details such as facts are omitted.

re: Saddam being a "family" man. Cockburn must have "forgotten" that the assassination attempt on Uday was widely believed to have been commissioned by Saddam himself.
Then there were the sons-in-law that he executed after bringing them back from Jordan with promises of forgiveness for being against him.
Then there are the thousands of families whose daughters were raped and tortured and the males were tortured and killed. Might be a few blood feuds there, ya think?
