During WWII, only a small percentage of Germans gassed Jews, but all Germans soldiers were fighting for a regime that did so as a matter of policy.

The south was practically a police state by mid-war, but some of the rebel soldiers didn't care as long as blacks were held down. Others saw that the idea of individual or states' rights were a sham cause and began to desert in large numbers.

LOL. Lincoln turned the north into a police state before the war really even started. He arrested legally elected legislatures and many many thousands of ordinary citizens, often on just the suspicion of a suspicion, very often with no charges ever being filed against them.
