Not true. NBA player Bison Dele, murdered by his brother in 2002, quit the NBA precisely because he was tired of the attention and the money meant nothing to him. I'm sure there are others examples of pro athletes who felt likewise.

I just saw a show on HBO this morning about Marvelous Marvin Hagler and his rivalry with Sugar Ray Leonard. After his (disputed) fight with Leonard, Marvin walked away from the sport, an 8 figure bout that was already planned and moved his family to Italy.
