Why is downloading music from the internet any damn different than popping a cassette into your radio boom box and getting it from your favorite radio station?

Because copying a radio station broadcast for personal use is specifically allowed by law. Downloading ("stealing") music is not.

Because the radio station has permission from the record company to broadcast the music. The person who shares MP3 files does not have such permission.
