Maybe his dog was trying to help him. People are reported dogs trying to nip and lesions that turned out to be malignant. This pup may have smelled bad tissue and tried to clean up.

I think you may be right. A family member noted that in the months prior to her diagnosis of breast cancer that her Doberman had been pushing his nose up to the affected breast and acting strange,,she thought it was some sort of strange doggie thiing {pervert} until she got the diagnosis. Now he has new respect.
