Being offended is a substitute for thinking
http://www.jewishworldreview.com -- BEING OFFENDED means never having to answer an argument.
The conversation went something like this. Caller: "I want you to know your column on drug legalization offended me."
Me: "Let me get this straight. Because I said drugs are soul-deadening and far too lethal to legalize, you were offended?"
Caller: "That's right. It made me want to hurl."
Charming, the way these Gen-Xers express themselves. I don't hear this more than a few dozen times a week: "I'm offended." "I'm deeply offended." "I was really offended." "I found your column very offensive."

It may be rude to pick a fight with someone, but TS. I like being rude. In fact, I am so rude that folks who normally cut into line at the grocery store back off instantly when they see me coming.

For the record, I am madly in love (in a non-romantic way!) with one of TM's sons, simply because of his beautiful manners and his sincere attitude. TM, I congratulate you on raising that super guy!
Now if someone is "offended" by this thread, I find it almost comical and would suspect that party has some sort of problem assimilating in polite society. I would strongly urge anyone who's "offended" reading this to take a good long look in the mirror!

AV, I LOVE it! So much common sense....
Too bad some people can't grasp the importance of the concept.

Your rant might have a little more value if you knew how to spell/use 'proper grammar'. BUT, lemme guess, it's those damned baby-boomers who are to BLAME, riiight?
To: Paul C. Jesup
It appears this thread WAS about you!
Grow up.
To: Texas Mom
Have some fun with those who are 'offended'....
ask them WHY they're offended.
ask them WHAT is the offense
ask them for the facts/basis for their legitimate offense.
WARNING...
wear a raincoat....
Cuz, they'll spit and sputter trying to answer you!
LOL!
To: Texas Mom
Thank you for reprinting this singularly penetrating article.

I've said this for years. Whenever anyone in earshot tells me something offended them, I always ask why, specifically, they were offended. They tend to hem and haw a bit, and then retreat.
It's not limited to Gen Xers - people all over the age spectrum do this nifty little trick. It is a mental shorthand - it allows them to express their indignation, as if somehow we are all on the 'let's not offend so-and-so" standard of behavior.
This to me is arrested emotional development and a terrible immaturity. So what else is new?

It IS very good. Thanks for bringing it back. Of course you did not post the entire article and I am offended. ;)
To: Humidston
Well, it looks like the punchline is Paul.
His replies were too neat though, I'm still thinking he's putting us on.
To: ClearBlueSky
I was told : " You have a point, but it doesn't mean anything." I would be *so* offeneded if anyone said that to me.

I find this thread to be an insult, for the title of the thread: 'Being Offended is Substitute for Thinking.' You cannot insult a idiot, because that idiot will never realize that he or she is being insulted.
Paul, Paul, Paul. In the first place I didn't not make up the title of the thread. It was the origional title that the writer gave the article.
In the second place you have proven to anyone who has seen this thread that the writer was right on. I'm wondering if you have thought about anything you have written. Or, since you were offended by the title you just went off on a rant without thinking, proving Mr. Feders point, without ever reading the article in full.
Thanks for showing up you made it quite interesting, to say the least.

I read the thread and kept waiting for his punchline. I really thought it was a joke. Guess not, LOL! No, I'm afraid he was serious... Sad isn't it?
To: Texas Mom
Pathetic.
In a search on him, I found him using the following words - mostly directed at you - merely because you posted WORD FOR WORD an article you (and most of us) found interesting:
Idiot
Rude
[Reminded me of] Jerk
Elitist
[Another] Jerk
Hyprocrite
Sheesh! The boy needs to work on anger management!

Sheesh! The boy needs to work on anger management! Understatement of the week. He sure seems to have a burr in his saddle..

So I missed a semicolan and comma; so what.
To: Texas Mom
You keep change the subject when I point out how you are wrong.
To: Humidston
You are really scraping the bottom of the barrel to pull stuff from other threads and take them out of context.
To: Paul C. Jesup
You are really scraping the bottom of the barrel to pull stuff from other threads and take them out of context. Paul, you've lost it. She got all that from THIS thread. Nothing was pulled from other threads.
