They've done studies on compulsive gamblers. For most it's not about winning large sums (or mascochistly wanting to lose). Gamblers get addicted to "living on the edge." They gamble to get an emotional high, to teeter on a mental tightrope. Even when they win they go back for more and lose most of it.

Sounds a lot like politics, doesn't it?

I still have difficulty understanding how anyone with half a brain could go and piss away money like that. I used to go with my buddies to sasinos, and I would drop 100 or 150 bucks as part of the evening. But I was never under any illusion that I could outsmart the casino. It was just the cost of the evening.

It's his money and he can do with it what he wants.

Of course, if he hadn't lectured the USA on our lack of values, he wouldn't be caught with his proverbial pants down.

He never lectured people about gambling. I don't see any hypocrisy here. And he did the commendable thing and called it quits.

I am a gambler. Not addicted, never lost the rent money. It is NOT whether I win or lose (that is secondary), it is the thrill of the game, the unknown, the quest.

It gives gamblers the same buzz drug users get. Climb back up on your soap box bill, you can't make any more of a hypocritical fool out of yourself.

At least he never smoked a joint.

Except maybe on that date with Janis Joplin.

He is still in denial. No one can afford to lose even one million playing cards or especially sucker games like craps and roulette. He talks just like a gambling addict.

If one never lectured against adultry if you do it standing up is it still not hypocritical if you get caught while you were standing.

Please -- he lectured & wrote all over the place about how what everyone else does is a big problem but conveniently & specifically left his own huge vice out of it. The hypocrisy can be found in the macro, not the micro.

And he did the commendable thing and called it quits.

After he got caught.

What I am wondering is how secure high rollers will feel going to casinos if they will end up reading about themselves in the papers later.

Well, they may think twice before they write a book about virtues.

I would drop 100 or 150 bucks as part of the evening.

Exactly. When I go to a casino, I take one or two hundred $$$, which I expect to see never again. It's the cost of the entertainment.

A "big win" is being able to extend the time at the blackjack tables with the original stake, or (even better) quitting at breakeven. Wow!

Compulsive gamblers focus on winning, recreational gamblers focus on playing.

I like shooting quarters into my pond with a slingshot.

So far, I have yet to come out ahead.

I will shoot some more this afternoon.

I'm feeling lucky today.

Even if he did lecture against gambling - who would know better? It's kind of like the parents who had to get married trying to keep the same thing from happening to their children - that's not hypocrisy, it's wisdom.

If Bennett were liberal, we wouldn't even know he had a gambling problem.

OK, so by that logic, Bill Clinton and Kobe Bryant should do a speaking tour of how screwing around on your wife can affect your marriage and on the pitfalls of boinking women other than your wife.
