Just as Ike refused to do anything at all, by word or deed, to help the Hungarians in their brave fight against the stinking Commies, in '56, so too did our government hand Cuba over to Castro.

There always seems to be a lot of bad historical data out there about castro and his "revolution", I thought this may help clear things up a bit.
There is also a whole lot to blame to lay on Cuba's aristocracy, and their disdain for "El Negro" Batista, and his ex-maid First Lady; they supported Castro's revolution.
Another thing that people do not seem to know is the fact that there were several groups fighting against Batista at the time, and that Castro literally stole his victory from another insurgent group.

How exactly could Eisenhower have "helped" the Hungarians in 1956? Hungary was part of, and surrounded by, Warsaw Pact countries, which all were forward bases for the Red Army. We had trouble enough rebuilding western Europe and keeping West Berlin open. Krushchev's response to American support of the Hungarian revolt could well have been to ignite a large scale war for western Europe, hardly an acceptable military strategy for the U.S.
But today there is no USSR to come to the aid of Cuba's Communist rulers, and it is curious to me that there has been no attempt to pressure Castro out of power.
