Got this on a youth-related listserv that I am subscribed to: ***************************************************************
FYI...please respond by Friday to: Karen Conner at EPI (Direct line - 202-331-5542, kconner@epinet.org
Dear Colleagues: CBS Evening News is doing a series, Making Ends Meet, to air this month. They seek to interview individual, single parent, or family who went from welfare to work, and then to being unemployed without any safety net- meaning they lost their job for reasons other than quitting [LB annotation: e.g. family and/or medical leave-related issue?], are not eligible for unemployment insurance, and/or they hit their limit for receiving welfare benefits. Reporter prefers the individual/family NOT be African-American. If you know anyone who might fit the bill - [LB annotation: particularly someone for whom a family or medical leave issue was involved!] - please contact Karen Conner at EPI (Direct line - 202-331-5542, kconner@epinet.org)

Talk about creating news.

Hmmm . . . this doesn't seem to be tailoring the news to fit a specific political agenda.
That whole "liberal bias in the media" thing must be a big myth.

Manufacturing news -- instead of, say, merely reporting it -- must be fun. *I* want to interview an albino immigrant from the Philippines who was mistreated by a bank teller -- any leads?

Look for facts to fit the hypothesis. Lots of credibility there.

Kinda argues against it being as big a problem as they are going to play it up as if they have to search this hard........
To: jawz
BTW, go to epinet.org -- they are a liberal economics interest group... bashing Bush tax cuts, saying the what's needed for economic stimulus is more education spending (LOL!).
http://www.epinet.org/subjectpages/stimulus.cfm So not only is CBS looking to make up news, they are getting leftist activists to do their dirty work for them.

e-mail this to Brent Bozzell at the MRCExcellent suggestion. I'm sure Limbaugh or some of the guys at FoxNews would find it amusing, too.
I'd love to see this little attempt to manufacture news backfire in their faces at CBS.

why wouldn't they be eligible for umps? if they worked they paid in -

OTOH..who's watching CBS news...

The big news here is not CBS being a liberal sinkhole, but the involvement of EPI -- The Economic Policy Institute -- is a Dem/Union front oganization.
http://www.epinet.org/
So now we have the loop closed between the Dems and CBS.
To: jawz
The problem isn't in CBS
creating this story out of a sliver. It's in the number of people who will actually believe the manufactured problem is pervasive.
Never "misunderestimate" the stupidity of the average American lump of flesh.

It's unusual for CBS to use this type of procedure. Normally, when they need willing story subjects, they simply call up someone at the DNC and lay out the qualifications. The DNC guys pass the request down the pipe to pipple at the local level and the locals either find someone who actually IS in that predicament OR they pay someone to act the part. Then they call the network back and give them the subject's name address and phone number. The network sends out a crew to shoot footage and collect the spoon-fed DNC quotes, and then they edit up a report and put it on the air. Pure propoganda.
This cozy little arrangement has been in place for years and years. The lazy media gets someone else to do their job for them, and get rewarded by the DNC with scoops, perks, Christmas gifts and all kinds of stuff most folks don't know about. Deals on cars thru connected car dealers who are big party supporters, low rent on spiffed apartments, you name it. Do the DNC's bidding and you get along quite nicely, thankew.

Too bad they don't want to profile someone who went from welfare to work, picked up some benefits, got paid holidays, put food on the table and new clothes on his and his family's back, paid taxes, and donated to church. Golly, where would you find those kinds of people? No news there.

The racial "sensitivity" apsect of this story caught my attention. Am I misreading the implied "whites only" directive in this memo? I translate this as the usual CBS brainwashing mantra, "It's you It's you It's you...Identify Identify Identify"
Ummmmmmmm, NOPE Don't think I can get myself alarmed about this topic. Mz. Conner would do better to report on the dissolution of The Constitution (that's a joke, folks!).

I'm amazed that they've actually gotten this blatant about it. I encourage everyone to read
Bias : A CBS Insider Exposes How the Media Distort the News by Bernard Goldberg. One of the best reads I've had in awhile. I was in hysterics to discover that Dan Rather actually rehearsed the insane quips he used during the '00 election when the results were coming in. My personal favorites are:
"Frankly we don't know whether to wind the watch or to bark at the moon."
"If a frog had side pockets, he'd carry a hand gun."
"This race is tight like a too-small bathing suit on a too-long ride home from the beach."
AND THE GRAND FINALE!
"When the going gets weird, anchor men punt."
Someone at CBS should punt Dan. All fun aside, everyone should read this excellent book to gain an insider's look into what we already know is an overwhelming liberal bias in the media.
