My mother died of dementia. It is a long good bye. It's been seven years since she died. She was ill for seven more years before that...slowly dying day by day. Mother knew me till the end, she just couldn't talk. Still miss her.

In one sense, you certainly hate to see them go, but in another sense you will be forever grateful that you were able to be with her til the end, in spite of the state she was in. My mother feels that way about her dad, while her brother feels guilt for never being here.
