There is some basis in fact. Circa 1977 I met an individual that had obtained a contract from one of the Island groups to pick up scrap from WWII. He had photographs that he had taken of WWII "Tojo's" all lined up with vines winding around their fuselage etc. Most interesting! Actually the Japs had no way of getting them off the islands and just left them.
