Hamilton, of course, feared the rise of the Jeffersonian democrats and THEY are the reason we have court decisions many of us don't agree with "Court decisions" like those enforcing the Alien & Sedition Acts?

By the way, Mr. Jefferson and his philosophical brothers referred to themselves as "republicans"...

Actually, state courts were far more repressive to free speech than federal ones. After, Jefferson became president his crony, Clinton, initiated legal proceedings against a NY editor who criticized J. Under the dreaded Alien and Sedition Acts, truth was a defense under the NY (and other states' laws) it was not. Hamilton used that opportunity to argue for the defendent, his last great effort for freedom of the press (a 30 yr. fight of his). Though he lost the case the NY legislature was so impressed or embarrassed by his pleadings that it changed the law so that truth was a defense.
Democrat-Republicans became the Democrats; Federal-Republicans evolved into the Republicans. The term used by J's enemies was Democrats and it is more accurate.
