Related post. Hopefully FReepers won't see "Teamsters" and automatically discount it.

Cheap foreign labor is the best check we have on excessive union demands.

What about non-union jobs like computer programming and xray techs that are fleeing the country?

Singapore is a technologically advanced, law biding, high wage country. I see no problem here. Chile is far away and a very minor trading partner. The effect from chile should be very small either plus or minus.

Chile has much less of a welfare state and a much better retirement security program as well.

I think I read recently that the Chile economy is the strongest in all of South America. I think they took the Republican party ideal of free enterprise and ran with it. So, it might be good for us to be doing something positive with a country who is not dealing in slave labor.

"Cheap foreign labor is the best check we have on excessive union demands."

I used to think that way too, but now I see $6.50 an hour foundry jobs here in North Dakota going to China. Where does it end?

Is that the Libertarian/Corporate spin these days? Cheap labor is a short-term profit strategy. When the American consumer's market power is eviscerated, the multinationals will move elsewhere - faster than now.

One of the provisions of this bill is that those two countries get an unlimited number of H1-B and L1 visas.

I hope you like your paycheck. Its about to vanish. Get used to training your replacement.

Why shouldn't capital move to cheap labor when cheap labor will do? I'd rather have our workers working with computers than sewing machines. Does that make sense intuitively?

I don't know what you mean by American comsumers' market power "eviscerat[ing]." How would that happen?
