U.S. Plans to Release Photos of Saddam Sons - The photographs "are pretty bad"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is planning to release photographs of the bodies of Saddam Hussein's two dead sons to prove to the Iraqi people that they were killed by American troops, a U.S. official said on Wednesday.

The official, who asked not to be identified, told Reuters the photographs of Uday and Qusay were unlikely to be released on Wednesday, but "there are plans to do so."

"They are pretty bad," said the official of facial photographs that he had seen of the two sons, who the U.S. military said were killed in an intense firefight in Mosul on Tuesday. The faces are recognizable despite injuries, the official added,

In Baghdad, the top U.S. commander told a news conference in Baghdad that the United States would provide proof to the Iraqi people that Saddam's sons were indeed killed in the battle at a Mosul mansion.

But Army Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez stopped short of saying that photographs would be released. He said dental records, X-rays and four captured former senior figures of the Saddam regime helped establish certainty that the sons died in a four-hour battle with American troops.

Younger son Qusay's body provided a 100 percent match with dental records and his brother Uday's a 90 percent match, due to damage to the teeth. Sanchez told reporters .

X-ray records of Uday's injuries in a 1996 assassination attempt also bolstered the conclusion that the men died in a shootout with U.S. troops in Mosul in northern Iraq on Tuesday.
