You are sooooo right! Man, how I miss the smell of cordite as it drifts back from the gun line!

I also remember being told this: There are only two rounds that really mean anything, the first round you fire, and the last round you fire. Everything else is icing.

And these beloved words: Expend all ammo.
I remember the gunline being so obscured by smoke that we couldn't even see the gun sitting next to us.
And the sand jumping with every round fired.

Our unwritten motto was "Turn in rounds? We're Artillery, we NEVER turn in rounds!"

I still say that smoke was addictive.
And I can still bring it up from memory at will.
