The services need enlisted as well as officer personnel, but for many, I think the advice is sound to get the college degree and the ROTC commission first. Coming from a long line of citizen soldiers in America's wars from the suppression of Bacon's Rebellion on, there was never any question I would serve, only when and how long. I thought about a military career, and went to VMI, but ended up just doing my two years active and then a number of years in the reserves.

My husband enlisted in the Navy, and served on submarines. He has always said that submarines are hell on sailors, during peacetime. During wartime, submarines are an extremely safe place to be, while serving your country.
Yes, people who serve their country do so willingly, and know the risks. But being discriminatory when it comes to which slot you fill in the military is always a wise choice, especially when considering your future career options.
