This could get ugly. Is it true that an additional contingent of Marines are being sent to the embassy?

Fox is reporting there were no injuries. The commissary was hit.

Fred, our Comrades at the Washington Post/PRAVDA have posted this article on their website:

Actually, that last post should have gone to The Victor, not Fred Mertz (although I have nothing against Fred).

"The U.S. military said it had sent 41 Marines to reinforce security at the embassy and prepare possibly to evacuate U.S. citizens as the fighting intensified. The new arrivals will bring the number of U.S. troops in Liberia to about 70.

I don't think so but cannot find a story that confirms or refutes. Basically, they were coming from Spain and the FoxNews article said that the attack happened "hours after the Marines were sent". So, it may depend on how long it takes to get there from Spain and the mode of travel.

"President Bush is considering a request from U.N. Secretary Kofi Annan that the U.S. provide up to 2,000 troops for a peacekeeping mission to the West African country." Does this mean the UN is considering a request to send up to 2,000 troops to Baghdad?

Especially if you are one of the folks inside the compound!

There isn't any such thing as a "mortar bomb"

there are mortars, which fire SHELLS, and there are of course bombs of many types.

WHY I expect the "media" to actually get any of this right is beyond me.

I'm sure my fellow Devil Dogs will do their best, as always.

Semper Fi guys!

Fox just said Jennifer Eccleson had to go to the Embassy - her hotel had been hit.

If our men and women start dying over in Liberia, how are the Democrats going to try and square their arguments that when our military troops die in Iraq an unjust war and it is moral for them to die in Liberia?

Oh yeah, I forgot they are Democrats, anything can be said and it is true

They better make it a battalion of Marines. Nothing must be allowed to happen to this woman. She is making voice only reports now, too dangerous I suppose for even the funky satphone.

Yes, Dems get a pass on any conflicts of fact, inconsistencies and downright lies.

That said, I hope we just go in, scoop up our people and get out of there.

That annoyed me too. It took all my powers of self control not to correct the title. Media dolts!

Mortar hit around the compound but didn't hit inside the compound itself. One reporter injured. Don't know how serious.
