My understanding is that gays make up less than 3% of the population. (...probably more than that who "experiment" but are not exclusive to their sexual preference.) Isn't it amazing that we are so innundated with gay propaganda via every single TV show (pretty much) that everyone thinks the gay population is much larger? Once again, and remaining consistent with liberal philosophy, THE TRUTH DOESN'T MATTER, IT'S PERCEPTION THAT COUNTS!

Hmmm...isn't that the same philosophy of the red guy with those pointy things coming out his head, forked tail and cloved hooves? ;0)

That's correct. The 10% figure is deeply ingrained in the American consciousness due to the Kinsey Report. However, most social scientists now agree that the Kinsey study was flawed in this respect and greatly overrepresented the # of homosexuals in the country.

A newer and much more reliable survey on human sexuality conducted by researchers at the University of Chicago in the mid-90s produced the more reliable figure of ~2% of the population.

I agree that TV probably creates the perception of greater gay representation. As well, those who are wealthier and more educated than average tend to know more gays and consequently these folks quite naturally believe that gays represent a larger portion of the population than they actually do. The same goes for city-dwellers.
