You've identified one of many problems associated with the DMV. Since getting my first drivers license seventeen years ago, I have lived in three different states and never had to take a follow-up exam of any type (vision, book or road). I have had several license renewals in person at the DMV, by mail and on-line.

Fortunately for my fellow drivers, I haven't had an accident in sixteen years. *knock on wood*
