I remember a wedding at which I was an usher at, 15 years ago. The Preacher (an old college buddy of mine) was getting married: all the guys except myself and the bride's brother were in tuxes: I was in USAF Dress Blue, and her brother was in USMC Full Dress.

And over half the guests were in jeans and sneakers. I was appalled. . .

I had a friend whose daughter was getting married, and they asked me to man the camcorder. I could not believe some of the people showing up at the wedding. Some looked as if they came to the wedding straight from work (and, I'm not talking about suit-and-tie jobs). Like you, I was shocked.

A long time ago, I attended a wedding.

When I arrived at the church (Catholic, if it matters), I was wearing a dress just a tad more formal than those I normally wear to Mass on Sundays. I had in my handbag my chapel cap, which I donned upon entering the sancuary.

Anyway, when I got inside, I was shocked to see the wedding guests decked out in VERY casual summer attire. Shorts, T-shirts, sneakers, flip-flops...you name it. I felt like an idiot (I was young then, and more easily intimidated by others' opinions).

"How could they go to a church wedding dressed like that?" I thought to myself during the ceremony.

After the nuptials, there was a pause in the festivities of about two hours. When I arrived at the catering hall, I saw something VERY interesting. Every single person who was there had changed clothes. No longer were they wearing what they'd wear to a backyard barbeque, but formal dinner attire. It was as if the party was the important part and not the Nuptial Mass.

Does the good Lord care what we wear? No, I suspect He doesn't, and I'm sure He would look kindly upon anyone coming to church in tatters and rags if that was all he owned, but geez...when you dress up for parties and not for Him...well...it's just disrespectful is all.
