An elite IDF unit broke into a construction site in the West Bank town of Beituniya, near Ramallah, late Tuesday night and rescued Ramat Gan taxi driver Eli Gurel, who had been held captive for four days. Earlier, the police's anti-terror unit captured two of the Palestinian kidnappers in Kalandiya. No shots were fired, and no one was hurt in the rescue. Gurel was reported to be in good health.
Just before midnight, soldiers arrived at the site where Gurel was being held. One of them shouted down into a deep pit, "Is there anyone down there?" Gurel, who was bound but unharmed, shouted back, "It's me, Eli Gurel." A soldier carrying a flashlight climbed down into the hole, untied Gurel, and within minutes the two of them climbed to safety.
Gurel was kidnapped on Friday, after transporting four Palestinians from Lod to Jerusalem. Although his passengers spoke in Arabic, the taxi driver's suspicions were not raised for one of them was a four-year-old girl. Only when he reached the city's French Hill neighborhood did one of the men draw a knife and force him out of the car.
