I just got back from Rome. Loved it. However, Italy is no place of grace or supreme culture anymore. Rome was the dirtiest city I've seen in Europe, besides Skopje, Macedonia. There are beggars on every corner. The place reeks of human urine on a hot day. You don't see that in Germany. A friend of mine said the rest of Italy is the same. I did notice they have made Mussolini as kind of a cult figure down there.
Don't read me wrong. I've lived in Germany for three years now, and cannot wait to leave. I cannot stand these lazy, rather incompetent socialist goofs that now populate Germany. But the Italians are not much better-just a little nicer to tourists. They smell just as bad, though.

I agree with you -- Germany is cleaner and more affluent than Italy -- but I think you missed the point of his article, which was meant to be both biting and tongue-in-cheek.

I lasted a year and a half. However, I may return next year, only for the moola. I detest the place.
It may not smell like piss but you do routinely see men puled over on the side of the road taking a whizz. Six of one, half a dozen...
