TURKEY THREATENS TO TORPEDO SUPER COBRA

ANKARA [MENL] -- Turkey has advanced negotiations for the purchase of U.S. helicopters despite uncertainty over Ankara's ability to afford the estimated $2.2 billion price tag.

But the Turkish General Staff has threatened to suspend contract talks unless the United States apologizes for the capture of Turkish military personnel and special forces on July 4.

Turkey's Defense Ministry and General Staff agreed to drop several demands that have held up the completion of a contract to procure 50 AH-1Z Super Cobra helicopters. The demands included responsibility by manufacturer Bell-Textron for Turkish specifications for the attack helicopter.

The project has been under negotiations for more than two years amid differences regarding price, specifications and technology transfer. Turkey has designated the state-owned Turkish Aerospace Industries as the prime contractor with Bell-Textron as the main subcontractor.

Memo to Turkish General Staff:

If you can find a better helicopter -- buy it.

At least.

And insure a module to render them inoperable should Turkey ever decide to go against us.

As far as I am concerned, no United States military representitive need apologize for anything that they did on July 4.

I know when I drink too much beer I need some leeway :-)

Technology transfer? To a regime rapidly turning islamist? Really???

AH-1Z completes its first test flight 7th December 2000

Click here^ for a great article on the AH1Z. The Marines
ordered them as well along with UH1N's. Didn't know they
still made Hueys. Both of these are four bladed rotor craft.

UH-1Ys. The Marines already fly UH-1Ns and ~100 will be upgraded to UH-1Y specs, they won't be new builds.

Yeah I caught my typo later after reading more about them. Y's they will be. I wonder what they sound like with four non-hinged rotor blades. The exaust still comes out right under the rotor, but the blades arent't moving up and down like the reciprocating rotors did. May lose some of it's pop pop pop effect.
