Toe sucker jailed for life From correspondents in Santa Ana, California 12jul03

THE former supervisor of an American youth program has been sentenced to life in prison on 25 counts of lewd conduct and assault for sucking the toes of 20 boys.

Trenton Veches, 32, will be eligible for parole in 15 years. At his trial, Veches' lawyer said his actions at the Newport Beach centre with boys six to 10 years old were "horseplay".

But the prosecutor said Veches "clearly befriended these children, manipulated them and he sexually molested them".

Veches' mother, Joyce Ormes, said the sentence was too harsh.

"I don't know how he can spend life in prison for this when there was no sexual contact with the genitals, things like that," she said.

"Clearly Mr Veches posed a danger to the children of our community and he needed to be in prison," prosecutor Sheila Hanson said.

Veches was arrested in April 2002 after a co-worker reported seeing him sucking a boy's toes.

How about the new highway named for Clinton in his home stste of Arkansas? It's a little crooked, and has a long yellow streak down the center. Be careful if you drive on it, it's a little slick.

Manufacturers announced today that they will be stocking America's shelves this week with "Clinton Soup, to honor one of the nation's most distingushed men". It consists primariy of a weenie in hot water.

There is more left out here than is divulged. I need to know a lot more before rendering an opinion, don't you?

This headline must be changed. There can only be one genuine, trademarked Toe Sucker in America.

I need to know a lot more before rendering an opinion, don't you?

These may help.

From the Orange County Register after conviction:

Youth leader guilty in molestation charges

SANTA ANA – A former Newport Beach youth program supervisor was convicted Tuesday of multiple counts of child molestation for sucking the toes and feet of about two dozen boys.

Trenton Veches, 32, of Huntington Beach faces life in prison when he is sentenced July 11 for 25 counts of lewd acts with a child - one for each of the 23 boys and two for other inappropriate contact. He also will be sentenced for a misdemeanor count of possession of child pornography.

Authorities were alerted when by one of Veches' co-workers who became suspicious after seeing him spend an hour in a room alone with a boy. Veches was arrested in April 2002 after police discovered he had sucked the boys' toes and feet and found thousands of photos of child pornography on his home computer, some of boys engaging in sex acts. He also kept files on his victims.

Veches had worked with children for more than 16 years, starting as a youth recreation leader for the city of Tucson, said his mother, Joyce Ornes. He left Tucson for Newport Beach, she said.

Newport Beach hired Veches in 1998 to manage after-school programs. Several parents are suing the city, but officials say Veches didn't have a prior criminal record and cleared a background check. The officials said the arrest made the city take a "hard look" at its hiring policies and practices.

Another article from the time of arrest, which includes the following disturbing passage:

"Detectives searched his house and allegedly found a digital camera loaded with images of Veches sucking the toes of 45 partially clad children, all boys between ages 6 and 10, said Sgt. Steve Shulman."

I may be old and cynical, but I don't think "partially clad" means "he made them take their socks and shoes off".

It's really too bad this guy is eligible for parole.

Well, I think we'll agree it wasn't "horseplay". And we'll agree it was done for sexual gratification, which places it in the category of child molestation.

But a sentence of life in prison reminds me of the dialog in Pulp Fiction:

VINCENT -- You don't be givin' Marsellus Wallace's new bride a foot massage.
JULES -- You don't think he overreacted?
VINCENT -- Antwan probably didn't expect Marsellus to react like he did, but he had to expect a reaction.

A sentence of life in prison is an overreaction.

BTW, partially clad means partially clad. It doesn't mean partially nude, somewhat undressed, or nude.

I disagree. He's going to get parole. Hopefully he'll be too old to do anything but scare kids away by then, because he's not going to stop thinking about them.

What's the alternative with these child molestors, castration and lobotomy? Society shouldn't have to suffer their presence. Prison is fine with me.

"He's going to get parole."

Not if you had anything to say about it though. You start handing out life sentences to to toe suckers with no previous record, what do you does a reasonable person give a child rapist?

This kind of "hand 'em high" rhetoric, and these kind of overblown sentences, will lead to juries acquitting guilty molesters. I can point to the bleeding heart's negative reaction to the "three strikes law" as an example. Another would be the public's reaction to some of these "rape" cases where the (adult) woman says "stop" mid-way through consensual sex. Another would be the public's reaction to a "sexual harrassment" charge when a man compliments a woman's dress.

That said, I don't know what the answer is to these child molestation cases. History says that the guy is going to do it again. In 15 years, this guy will probably be back to his old game, despite the fact that after he pays his dues to society, his name and face will be (legally) plastered over the internet and every police station in the U.S., that he will probably be hounded out of his house, and he will pay for this the rest of his life.

Life in prison the rest of his natural life? You think you can find a jury who will sentence a 32-year-old man to that for toe sucking? Are you actually willing to present that choice to the jury -- guilty with life (no parole) or not guilty?

Since you obviously consider me unreasonable, why ask me? What do YOU think the sentence should have been?

I don't think the sentence was unreasonable. I don't think execution would have been unreasonable for this vampire and all others like him, but it's not a capital offense under the law. When I said society shouldn't have to suffer the presence of people who are sexually aroused by children, I meant it. Sentences should be extremely harsh. If the law will not protect us from these monsters, we'll have little choice but to begin executing them ourselves with no trial.

Glad to see you said "no previous record", instead of "first offense". He was past his 40th victim when he was caught, and there was absolutely no question of his guilt.

despite the fact that after he pays his dues to society, his name and face will be (legally) plastered over the internet and every police station in the U.S., that he will probably be hounded out of his house, and he will pay for this the rest of his life

Too damned bad. Might be kinder and safer all around to just kill him.

Yep. If you had a clear picture in your mind of this deranged pervert coming in his pants while sucking on YOUR little boy's feet, I don't think you'd have any problem putting him away forever.

But then, I'm the unreasonable one.
