A sense of community is really important to their success. A bunch of disconnected conservative blogs won't do much. A group of smart conservative blogs that all link to each other and do stuff for each other can do tons. And even InstaPundit, with 50,000 page views per day, relies on these smaller blogs for tips and links.
Let's also not forget the impact blogs are starting to make in the Fourth Estate. We all know the media is liberal. But above all else, it is *lazy*, and the more upstart bloggers can do the job of slicing and dicing the news and figuring out what the overlooked stories are, the easier it is for them. Do we really want to cede this ground to the liberals?

True to some extent.
Pinging myself as well. I want to think this one over before posting.

Instapundit is one of my daily visits - it's hard to pull yourself away!

If I decided to put up a blog(I don't have time presently), it would be in the areas I'm known best and the area I think I'm most respected in. That's where I'd start.
I'd open up a blog specializing in conservative tactics and 2nd Amendment areas. I'd hit the other issues, but it would be mostly there.
I'd make sure I'd source my points.
I'd have it picked up in Yahoo and google searches.
Most importantly, I'd network it. I'd post rallies there, and all the latest news.
FR is successful is you can find most important(and also hilarious) news on this site. If it's political or big, it's probably here. If it's a darwin award thing, it's here as well. Rallies are also posted here, and when it's at its best, it may help be a factor swinging an election.
