ORLANDO, Fla. -- Mickey Mouse can now sport cornrows, and Minnie Mouse can wear hoop earrings.
The Walt Disney Co. is loosening up its fastidious grooming standards for workers at its theme parks.
Under a new policy adopted last month, male park workers, for the first time, can wear braids provided they are above the collar, neatly tied close to the scalp and in straight rows. Female workers, who can now wear small hoop earrings, have been able to braid their hair for years.
"It is really becoming a mainstream look," said Melissa Valiquette, manager of Costuming, Cast Image and Appearance at Walt Disney World.
Males, who don't wear costumes, are no longer limited to just wearing Oxford-style shirts. They now have the option of wearing crewneck, turtleneck, mock turtleneck and three-button collared sweaters. Golf and polo shirts are still forbidden.
"Our personal opinion is that golf and polo shirts look nice when they're brand new but they don't look good after you've washed them,'' Valiquette said. "After you've washed them, they're naturally prone to looking sloppy."
Gary Steverson, a character performer at the Disney-MGM Studios park, said it makes sense to give male employees more options on shirts.
"It makes us more approachable to guests,'' Steverson said. "A person in a shirt and tie, how approachable are they?''
Female workers can for the first time wear hoop earrings, provided they are no larger than a dime. Only one ring per ear is permitted and they must be worn on the bottom of the earlobe. Post earrings can't be larger than a quarter.
The new grooming rules also allow for some more fancy-free footwear for female workers, who now will be able to wear open-toe and open-heel shoes and shoes with just a strap at the heel. Athletic shoes, sandals and western boots are still frowned upon. Hosiery still is a must.
In addition, the Costuming, Cast Image and Appearance office clarified its policy on employees who highlight their hair, spelling out that the highlights need to create a uniform look.
Union leaders praised the changes.
"Any additional leeway is a good thing,'' said Donna-Lynne Dalton, recording secretary for Teamsters Local 385, which represents bus drivers and costumed workers.
Added Juleeann Jerkovich, secretary-treasurer of United Food & Commercial Workers International Union Local 1625, "As long as you can come to work, have a little more freedom and maintain the professionalism, I always think that's a great thing.''
The last time Disney changed its grooming policy was in 2000 when the company allowed workers to grow mustaches. In 1994, female theme-park workers were permitted to use eye shadow and eyeliner and balding men were allowed to wear toupees.
After the changes in 2000, there was a rash of mustache-wearing employees.
"I think cornrows will be different," Valiquette said. "It's not a look that everyone can pull off."

Someone explain to me what good unions do.
How about a pair of pink fuzzy open-toed and open-heeled house slippers?
1. Attendance at parks is down due to Gay Days and the boycott by many Christians; and guess who is raising the next generation of children (hint: not the gays)
2. Any movie done in-house by Disney for the last several years has been a FLOP; only the Pixar-produced but Disney-marketed movies are bringing in any money. The Lion King, Disney's biggest hit, is being eclipsed by Finding Nemo in terms of ticket sales already.
3. Winnie the Pooh is a $1 billion dollar business, but the court case filed against Disney by the original owners of the Pooh copyrighted works keeps on going along. Disney's paltry settlement offers and attempts to get the court case dismissed have so far been unsuccessful.
