[history]
July 11 (Bloomberg) -- Nine residents of an Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas, have been quarantined because they are suspected of having severe acute respiratory syndrome.
The first case was reported on Tuesday. Some of the people had symptoms of a flu-like or respiratory illness after traveling through a Toronto airport, said David May, a spokesman for Dyess Air Force Base.

The World Health Organization last week declared the global SARS epidemic ``contained'' after removing Taiwan as last on its list of infected places.I wonder what WHO's formal definition of "contained" is... What if SARS is just taking the summer off, like the flu does every year? Is it still contained? Perhaps they just mean the current outbreak.

There may be another "super spreader" on the loose or it could be a false alarm. Sooner or later a new outbreak of sars is almost a certainty. This seems a bit too soon however.

A report I read earlier this evening indicated that initial tests came back "negative" for SARS.

As I recall, it takes several weeks for the test to show up positive, due to some delay in antibody formation. I think I recall three weeks as the length of time before tests are more accurate.
In any case, SARS is a disease that is hard to diagnose.

Good place for SARS to break out, Abilene, Texas, is one hot hellhole this time of year and SARS is extremely sensitive to heat. 24 hours in an unairconditioned building at Dyess would sterilise anything.

That nature link is a good one. Thanks. ;-D

Here we go again!
Am I the only one who is confused?
Two of the eleven have strep P.
Did those two go through the airport?
What are the symptoms of the remaining nine?
If all eleven have syptoms, two have strep P.,how did the others get what they have?
If anyone has an ID'D scenario, like case 1, case 2, etc, please let me know.
