Shalala, Miami show true colors
The conscience of the Clinton administration came through as expected Monday afternoon. She didn't show up.
DONNA SHALALA, FORMER SECRETARY of Health and Human Services under Bill Clinton and present president of the University of Miami, announced Monday that the Hurricanes would abandon their partners in the Big East and jump to the Atlantic Coast Conference starting with the 2004-05 season. This came after she previously had promised she would not do so unless her friends at Boston College and Syracuse were also invited.

"DONNA SHALALA, FORMER SECRETARY "
I don't believe for a second that this is a unilateral decision by her, and am more inclined to believe she is simply following 'advice' from whatever powers run the sports program. U Miami sports and recruiting are a HUGE business, and I cannot imagine she really cares what league the school is in.

It was no surprise to see that the columnist is from Boston, so his disappointment and bias in this matter is understandable. That said, Donna Shalala did what any responsible University president would do. After a decent interval, during which she fought unsuccessfully for the inclusion of BC and Syracuse, Shalala did what was best for her school. The ACC is clearly a better league, and a much better fit for Miami's football and baseball programs.
Boston College was, and still is, clearly disappointed that it was not invited. Most ACC schools wanted them in, and those same schools still want BC and Syracuse to join. Their invitations were vetoed by three North Carolina schools, but the future power of that bloc will shortly be diluted by the additions of Miami and Virginia Tech as full (i.e.: voting) members. So who knows what the future holds for further expansion...?
